We Wish That Our Pets Could Live Forever…

How to protect our pets from hidden chemicals in everyday products

We LOVE our pets — they are part of the family.  They are our walking companions, our welcome home greeters, and our constant source of unconditional love and happiness.

We feed them the best food that we can, buy them cozy beds, and overfill their toy baskets to stimulate their brains. But here’s the surprising truth: even the most “pet-friendly” items can hide harmful chemicals that can harm our pets (and the planet).

With their smaller bodies, bare paws and habits of chewing, licking, and lying close to the ground, many veterinarians advise a prudent approach to pet supplies: assume that any environmental chemical could pose a risk, and try to limit your pets’ contact with them whenever possible.

Common toxins found in pet products:

  • Pet Beds & Mats: If a fabric claims to be stain-resistant, water-repellent and/or flame-retardant, you can bet its been coated in PFAS (forever chemicals) linked to hormone disruption and cancer. These chemicals also persist in the soil & water.

  • Toys: Many plush, vinyl or plastic toys contain phthalates and BPA, chemicals that can leach out when chewed, and harm the endocrine system.  These same chemicals pollute our food, water and soil.

  • Food & Treat Packaging: Many pet foods are packaged in bags lined with PFAS or stored in cans lined with BPA (for their barrier properties). These can migrate into food causing illness and disease. Never store pet food in plastic bins, as the oils from fat in the food oxidize, creating harmful compounds that can damage DNA and cause inflammation. The nutritional value of the food also deteriorates in plastic.

  • Food & Treats: Many pet foods can contain preservatives & chemical additives to increase shelf life. Some also contain pesticides, heavy metals and antibiotics from food ingredients. All contaminate our soil & water.

  • Grooming Products: Artificial fragrances, parabens, and sulfates in shampoos and deodorizers & sprays can irritate skin and add to your pet’s toxin load.

  • Yard Chemicals:  Pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers have been linked to cancers like bladder cancer and lymphoma in dogs and gastrointestinal toxicity in cats. Pets can ingest them simply by walking on treated grass and licking their paws.  They also track them indoors where their humans can be impacted.

What you can do to keep your furry friends safe:

Every small change you make has a big impact on the health of your pet.

By choosing safer food and products, skipping harsh yard chemicals, and staying informed, you’re giving your pets the gift of a longer, healthier, and happier life — and protecting our PLANET at the same time!
