Your Clothing Choices Matter!
|
|
|
Last week, we uncovered the hidden toxins in synthetic fabrics. Now let’s talk solutions — what to wear instead and how to make small, realistic swaps that protect your health and the planet.
Choosing natural fabrics over synthetics isn’t just a fashion choice—it’s a health choice. Most modern clothing is made from plastic fibers that shed microplastics & chemicals into our air, water, and skin, releasing toxins that can disrupt our hormones and pollute ecosystems from your washing machine to the ocean.
Fabrics like cotton, hemp, linen, jute, wool, and silk are made by nature, for your body. They breathe better, release fewer chemicals, and break down back into soil at the end of their life.

Made by Nature, for Your Body
Plant-Based Fibers:
-
Cotton / Organic Cotton – breathable, biodegradable, gentle on skin
-
Linen & Hemp – naturally antimicrobial, require less water
-
Jute & Bamboo (mechanically processed) – durable, renewable
-
TENCEL™/Lyocell — wood-cellulose based, closed-loop process, lower impact than many synthetics.
-
Recycled natural fibers — e.g., recycled cotton, or textiles recirculated rather than virgin synthetic.
Animal-Based Fibers:
-
Wool, Silk, Alpaca, Cashmere – natural, non-shedding, long-lasting (choose untreated and responsibly sourced options)
-
Leather – can be sustainable when vegetable-tanned and traceable (most commercial leather is chrome-tanned, chemically coated, and toxic to people and the planet.)
Tip: Look for fabrics labeled 100% natural fiber — synthetic blends often sneak in but a natural fiber blend is BETTER than a full synthetic any day!

What to Look For When You Shop
These certification verify sustainability & chemical safety for your body & the planet:
“Made in the USA” often means lower carbon emissions, safer labor, and stricter chemical standards — but check fiber content and certifications, since it doesn’t automatically mean toxin-free or sustainable.
